In recognition of the invaluable contributions of individuals with developmental disabilities, Governor Josh Shapiro has proclaimed March 2025 as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month in Pennsylvania. This annual observance promotes inclusion, celebrates diversity, and raises awareness about the challenges and achievements of those with developmental disabilities.
Governor Shapiro stated:
“In recognition of the many accomplishments and contributions made by those with developmental disabilities, I encourage all Pennsylvanians to support those with a developmental disability and their families in all aspects of community life.”
This proclamation follows his September 2024 designation of Direct Support Professionals Week (September 8-14, 2024), recognizing the dedicated individuals who provide essential care and support to individuals with disabilities. Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) play a vital role in empowering people with developmental disabilities to live independently and fully participate in their communities. Read more about how organizations like Community Resources for Independence (CRI) honored DSPs here.
The National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities (NACDD) has designated the 2025 theme as “We’re Here All Year,” emphasizing that accessibility, opportunities, and community inclusion should be a priority every day—not just in March.
In Pennsylvania, this proclamation serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing efforts to ensure equal access to education, employment, healthcare, and social opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities. Advocacy groups and state agencies continue to push for policies and programs that foster independence, dignity, and full participation in community life.
Throughout March, communities across the Commonwealth are encouraged to engage in initiatives that promote understanding, accessibility, and acceptance—whether through local events, workplace inclusion programs, educational workshops, or personal advocacy.
As we observe Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, let’s commit to supporting and celebrating the achievements of individuals with developmental disabilities and those who support them. Their contributions strengthen our communities, and by working toward greater inclusivity, we ensure that Pennsylvania remains a place where all citizens can thrive.
