Scam phone calls are on the rise, and recently some of our participants have reported receiving suspicious calls claiming to be from Medicare or Medicaid. These callers often say you have “unused benefits” and then attempt to get you to reveal personal information—including asking whether you currently have Medicare or Medicaid.
These calls are not legitimate.
According to the notice provided to participants, Medicare and Medicaid will never:
Call you to request personal information
Ask if you “still have” insurance—because they already have that information
How to Protect Yourself
You can reduce your risk and stay safe by keeping a few key guidelines in mind:
1. Never share personal information over the phone.
If someone calls unexpectedly asking for insurance details, Social Security numbers, or other sensitive information—even if they sound official—do not give it out.
2. Verify before responding.
If you’re unsure whether a call is genuine, hang up and contact your Service Coordinator or the office directly. A quick check can prevent fraud and protect your identity.
3. Stay alert and trust your instincts.
If something feels off, it probably is. Scammers rely on creating urgency or confusion—don’t let them rush you.
