Living with an intellectual or developmental disability (IDD) doesn’t mean giving up independence or community connections.

For brothers Ron and Robert, CRI’s Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) make sure family, friendship, and freedom remain at the heart of their lives.

Staying Connected as Brothers

Ron and Robert both live in their own homes in central Pennsylvania, but thanks to CRI’s caregivers, they see each other almost every day. Wednesdays are especially important — the brothers spend the afternoon at their favorite local restaurant or browsing the flea market, where Robert is so well-known that the vendors ask about him if he misses a week.

CRI ensures Robert always has DSP support on Wednesdays so he can enjoy his traditions and stay active in his community.

Ron’s Story: Independence at 80

At 80 years old, Ron is proud to live on his own, but he also knows staying safe requires the right support. As he got older, remembering to take his medications became harder — a risk that could have meant moving into a facility.

CRI stepped in to find a better solution. Working with his supports coordinator and healthcare providers, CRI arranged for a locking, beeping pill box and trained DSPs to help fill it each week. Now Ron can manage his medications safely, while enjoying the freedom of living independently.

“I love celebrating birthdays, visiting family, and spending time with my brother,” Ron says. “Because of CRI, I can live in my own apartment and stay active in my community.”

Everyday Support That Makes a Big Difference

Over the years, both Ron and Robert have been supported by many DSPs. Their caregivers have helped with cooking, cleaning, and transportation — but more importantly, they’ve given the brothers the ability to live the lives they choose. From community fairs to holiday celebrations, CRI makes sure both men stay connected to the people and places they love.
