For Cameron, life is all about trains, community, and independence.

At just 20 years old, he’s already proving that living with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and cerebral palsy doesn’t mean missing out on the things you love. With the right support from CRI, Cameron is able to enjoy his hobbies, volunteer, and build a life that’s uniquely his own.

A Passion for Trains

Cameron’s love for trains runs deep. He has a job at one train station, volunteers at another, and is an active member of his local model railroad club. Surrounded by fellow train enthusiasts, Cameron has built friendships and found a community where his passion truly shines.

Moving Beyond Limitations

While Cameron uses a wheelchair and communicates mainly through his iPad, his abilities far outweigh any limitations. What he wanted most was independence — the chance to be in the community without needing his mom by his side at all times.

With the help of his CRI Direct Support Professional, Amy, that wish became reality. Amy provides the support Cameron needs to safely get out in the community several times a week, whether it’s attending train club meetings, shopping at his favorite stores, or enjoying a night out in the park.

Finding Independence Through CRI

“Because of CRI, I can get out into the community on my own and do the things I love,” Cameron shares. “I don’t always need my mom with me anymore, and that makes me feel more independent.”

This milestone is more than just about transportation or mobility — it’s about confidence, freedom, and being able to live the kind of life Cameron has always imagined for himself.

Why Cameron’s Story Matters

For families of young adults with IDD and physical disabilities, Cameron’s journey is a powerful reminder that independence is possible with the right support. CRI’s DSPs are trained to meet individuals where they are — helping them build confidence, stay safe, and participate in the activities that make them happiest.
